FAQs

Everything you need to know about our water filtration systems, water quality in New Zealand, and what makes clean water genuinely clean.

Our systems

What warranty do Clean Water Co water filters come with?

All Clean Water Co water filtration systems come with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty. If something isn't right, get in touch and we'll work with you to sort it out, whether that means a replacement part, a repair, or a full unit replacement. Please get in touch with our team and we will take care of it from there.

Do Clean Water Co filters require plumbing or professional installation?

No, they don't. Our systems are designed to sit on your benchtop and can be set up by anyone in about ten minutes. There's no plumbing, no plumber, and no permanent installation involved. That also makes them genuinely portable, so they move with you when you move house. It's part of the reason renters and homeowners across New Zealand have found them useful.

How much counter space does the Clean Water Co S6 take up?

The Clean Water Co S6 measures D370mm x W270mm x H418mm (15kg), which is compact enough to fit on most kitchen benchtops without taking over. We'll update this with exact dimensions shortly.

Has the Clean Water Co filtration system been independently tested?

Yes. Our water filtration systems have been tested independently for performance and safety. We'll be publishing the full results here shortly so you can see exactly what was measured and how it performed.

Is the Clean Water Co system certified by any standards body?

Yes. Our systems carry both CE and CB certifications, which are recognised international standards for electrical safety, performance, and quality.

CE certification confirms the product meets European safety, health, and environmental protection requirements, while CB certification is a global scheme that verifies compliance with international electrical safety standards across more than 50 participating countries. Together they give you confidence that the system has been tested and approved against rigorous independent benchmarks.

Filtration &contaminants

What contaminants does the Clean Water Co water filter remove?

Our filters use four-stage reverse osmosis, which removes the full range of contaminants RO can handle.

That includes fluoride, chlorine, heavy metals like lead and arsenic, nitrates, bacteria, viruses, microplastics, and dissolved solids.

The bit that makes our system different is what happens after the RO stage: we remineralise the water by adding back beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Standard RO systems strip these out and leave you with very pure but very flat water.

Our approach gives you water that's free of the things you don't want, while keeping the minerals your body actually uses.

What does a reverse osmosis (RO) water filter remove?

Reverse osmosis is one of the most thorough filtration methods available.

A well-designed RO filter removes fluoride, chlorine, chloramines, lead, arsenic, nitrates, bacteria, viruses, pharmaceuticals, microplastics, and most dissolved solids, typically down to 0.0001 microns.

The catch is that it also removes beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium, which is why remineralisation matters in a complete filtration system.

Do Brita and gravity water pitcher filters remove fluoride?

Most gravity pitcher filters, including Brita, don't remove fluoride. They're effective at improving taste and reducing chlorine, and some can reduce heavy metals like lead and copper to varying degrees. What they generally can't remove is fluoride, nitrates, bacteria, viruses, or dissolved solids.

They're a reasonable starting point but not a complete solution, particularly if fluoride removal is a priority for you.

What is remineralised water and why does it matter?

Remineralised water is RO water that has had beneficial minerals added back in after filtration.

Pure RO water is very effective at removing contaminants, but it also strips out everything else, including the minerals your body uses.

Drinking demineralised water long-term isn't ideal, which is where remineralisation comes in. It puts the calcium, magnesium, potassium, and silicic acid back, so the water tastes better and is genuinely healthier to drink.

It's the difference between a complete water solution and just a filter.

Is remineralised RO water safe for children and babies?

Yes. RO filtration removes over 99% of dissolved solids including lead, nitrates, microplastics, and chlorine, which makes it an exceptionally pure base for drinking water and for preparing baby formula.

The remineralisation step then adds beneficial minerals back in, so the water is safe and balanced for the whole family.

Water quality in New Zealand

How do I find out what's in my tap water in New Zealand for free?

Every regional council in New Zealand publishes an annual drinking water quality report covering the treated water supplied to your area.

Search for your council's name plus "drinking water quality report" and the most recent results should come up.

Watercare also publishes water quality data for Auckland residents at watercare.co.nz.

Keep in mind that these reports reflect water quality at the treatment plant. By the time water travels through older pipes to your tap, the picture can look a little different.

How can I get my tap water tested in New Zealand?

The only way to know for certain what's coming out of your specific tap is to get it tested independently.

Hills Laboratories is a NZ-based testing service that can analyse your tap water sample and give you a detailed breakdown of contaminants, minerals, and other compounds. It's what we used when we first started researching water quality in New Zealand, and it's worth doing if you want a clear picture of your specific water rather than a regional average.
